Know what you want the piece to do.

Before trying something on, picture it in your wardrobe. What would you wear it with? Does it fill a gap, replace a worn favourite or add a detail you actually enjoy?

You do not need a perfect capsule wardrobe. Naming the purpose simply gives you something useful to judge against, beyond how the piece looks on the hanger.

Compare the neighbouring size.

If the fit feels uncertain, try an adjacent size when available. Compare the shoulders, waist, length and ease of movement, rather than choosing by the label alone. If neither size gives the effect you want, another cut may be worth trying.

Take comparable full-length photos if the shop permits. Photograph yourself only, and keep other shoppers out of the frame.

Move as you will in real life.

Sit down, walk, reach and bend comfortably. Check pockets, closures and any areas that feel tight or awkward. Consider the layer you will usually wear underneath, and try that combination if you can.

A photo can help you compare appearance. It cannot tell you how fabric feels or whether you will be comfortable after an hour.

Consider the light and the pairing.

Look at the colour under more than one available light source, where practical, and compare it with something you already own. A useful question is whether you can picture an outfit you would happily wear.

Try a second colour if you are undecided. You may like the garment but prefer the effect of a different shade near your face or alongside your trousers.

Ask what an alteration would involve.

If a hem or sleeve needs adjusting, ask a tailor or the store about feasibility, cost and timing before buying. An AI illustration cannot determine whether a real garment has enough fabric or the right construction for an alteration.

Also check the retailer’s current returns policy, including any conditions around worn or altered items. Do not assume that an altered purchase can be returned.

A fitting-room companion is coming.

We are developing a Prezenso feature intended to offer another perspective on sizing, cut, colour and potential tailoring before purchase. It is planned for launch and is not yet available.

For now, use the checklist above and our guide to assessing clothing fit. Explore the planned feature on the homepage.
