How long should an untucked shirt be?
An untucked shirt needs enough coverage for normal movement without a hem that feels longer than you want. Proper Cloth’s shirt-length guide offers the middle of the seat and the middle of the trouser fly as starting references, while explicitly noting that bodies differ.
Treat those as comparison points, not a universal measurement. Compare with a shirt you already like, worn with the same trousers, and look at the front and back.

A shirt worn tucked needs room to stay tucked.
Check what happens when you sit and raise your arms. If the shirt repeatedly pulls out in ordinary movement, the combination may need more length or a different arrangement. If it bunches heavily at the waist, compare the cut and fabric as well as the length.
Do not automatically shorten a shirt you mainly wear tucked. First establish the problem you are trying to solve and the way you will actually wear it.

Is the shirt too long, or is the combination different?
Try the same shirt with another comfortable trouser rise. Then compare tucked and untucked versions if the shirt allows. Look at the top as a whole: width, sleeve length and fabric can change the impression of length.
A long overshirt may be intentional; a dress shirt designed to stay tucked may feel awkward when worn out. If a shirt works in one role, it does not have to work equally well in the other.

A short mirror test.
- Wear the trousers and shoes you plan to pair with it.
- Take a full-length photo with the shirt arranged as you would normally wear it.
- Sit, reach forward and lift your arms comfortably. Check for pulling or unwanted exposure.
- Try one alternative: a tuck, another rise, or another shirt cut.
- Compare the two photos and decide which balance feels right to you.
Keep camera position and stance similar between photos. Otherwise you may be comparing the photography more than the outfit.

Should you have the shirt shortened?
If you like the shirt apart from its length, ask a tailor about the hem shape, buttons and pockets before deciding. A change to the hem may alter more than the amount of fabric at the bottom.
For a broader view, see how to check men’s clothing fit. Prezenso’s outfit check is designed to help connect shirt length to the rest of the silhouette, rather than treating a single measurement as the whole answer.
